Musk says SpaceX has closed $40bn of debt for GPUs

On his personal X account, the SpaceX chief executive called it primarily callable debt for GPUs arriving in Q1 and Q2, and said few of the 200-plus neoclouds will make it through.

Elon Musk said on 25 October that SpaceX has closed $40bn of debt to buy graphics processing units (GPUs). Writing on his personal X account at 20:11 CET, he said: "SpaceX closed $40B of debt for GPUs, but we’re investment grade and have Starlink & launch revenue." SpaceX itself has published nothing on the financing. Polstob found no post on @SpaceX, no release on ir.spacex.com and no new SEC filing at about 23:06 CET. In its 20 October results release, SpaceX says it announces material information mainly through its investor relations page and the @SpaceX account.

In a follow-up post at 20:50 CET, Musk described the borrowing: "This is primarily callable debt for GPU purchases that will arrive in Q1 and Q2. Not a major factor this quarter." Beyond calling it primarily callable, he did not say which year those quarters fall in, who lent the money, at what cost, or how the debt is structured. At 22:01 CET he added: "SpaceX is not buying any neoclouds. Pointless."

His first post was a reply agreeing with another user's post about AI data-centre capacity. In it he said that, over the past few weeks, debt markets had "almost entirely shut off access to money for any company that doesn’t have substantial revenue independent of AI data centers". The investment-grade description is Musk's; SpaceX's 20 October release lists keeping an investment-grade balance sheet among its priorities, but neither he nor the company has named a rating in the posts or that release.

“That means the 200+ neoclouds are going to see guppy-level death and consolidation. Some will make it through, but not many.”

Reuters reported Musk's posts on 25 October and noted that it had reported earlier in October that SpaceX was negotiating with banks and asset managers over $40bn of financing for AI chips.

SpaceX reported third-quarter 2026 revenue of $14.6bn, up 161% from $5.6bn a year earlier, and net income of $4.4bn, in its 20 October results. It said its nameplate computing capacity reached 1.7 GW at 30 September 2026.
