Source: Office for National Statistics; Statistics Denmark, September 2026. Month-on-month and quarter-on-quarter rows are seasonally adjusted volumes for both countries. Great Britain's year-on-year rows are seasonally adjusted volumes; Denmark's year-on-year rows use its price-adjusted index without seasonal adjustment, so the year-on-year rows are on different bases.
Inside the September figures
In Great Britain, mail-order retail sales also fell in September 2026. Supermarket sales volumes fell after rises in July and August, to slightly below their June level; the ONS said that fall was partly because of lower-than-usual clothing sales. Non-food stores sales volumes fell 0.4% on the month. Automotive fuel volumes rose on the month, despite what the ONS described as continuing fuel price rises. The share of retail sales made online slipped to 28.8% from 28.9% in August.
In Denmark, the largest September rises were in retail sales of second-hand goods, up 3.5% from August, and of household equipment, furniture and building materials, up 2.5%. The largest falls were at petrol stations, down 2.7%, and in pharmacies and personal care retail, down 0.9%. Statistics Denmark said the 1.6% rise in Q3 2026 against Q2 was driven especially by consumer electronics and second-hand goods, both up 7.2% on that basis. It revised July's rise to 0.9% from 1.0%.
